Only about the sizes of a regular back pack, although there WILL be dickheads hauling about three times as much as that on to the flight.

I try to only pack light for the flight, and only put "valuables" in my back pack - stuff I don't want the baggage handlers to throw around such as electronic equipment.

I stow my backpack as soon as I get on the plane and then just shove a FEW things to keep me occupied during the flight in the little seat pocket in front of me - a book, a video game (maybe) - and anything I need like medication.

I recommended buying a COMFY inflatable pillow to take on the flight, that you can adjust. The aeroplane pillows are crap IMO.

As for the flight, ask for an aisle seat so you don't have to be the one stepping over everyone to go to the toilet. Drink a bit of water on the plane, and do the feet exercises they show you. Go for a couple of walks, but time them so that you won't get trapped away from your seat by the food trolley.

I always like to have a few drinks and pretend that I am in a bus, to take my mind off the turbulence.

Don't be afraid of calling the stewards if something annoying is happening eg. dickheads putting luggage down by your feet, people not putting their seats forward in front of you during meal times, etc.

Make sure you take copious amounts of materials to amuse yourself at the airport as there WILL be waiting and all the magazines and books available to purchase WILL be crap. Take something you are really interested to pass the time. I can suck hours away by playing DS and PSP in airport lounges.

Get to the airport when they say - usually a couple of hours before international flights.

Go to the toilet just before you get on the plane.

I'm just being random now.

Don't eat EVERYTHING they give you on the flight, just enough to make yourself feel comfortable.

Try to either sleep straight away on the plane, if you are tired, or stay up and sleep for the second half of the trip. This is a better way of avoiding jet lag than sleeping a bit, waking up, sleeping a bit more, etc.

People I met at Pasadena after having just come off the flight can attest to the fact that this actually works.

Be prepared to do absolutely nothing on the plane. You've got movies to watch, but it will eventually get uncomfortable and that's just life.

Be careful not to make your main luggage too heavy or you might have to pay excess or leave some of your stuff behind.

Ooooo, this one is very important. Make sure that you know the address of the first place you will be staying at, as the Visa form will ask you that question. Have it written down somewhere and keep it with your passport.

Some people like to carry a little travel wallet to keep their passport and tickets together in.

Never leave your bags unattended at the airport. Anyone could slip an illegal substance into them, and then you're screwed. Always pack you own bag, for the same reason.

Take a photocopy of your passport and keep it in your main luggage. It will make things easier if you lose your passport.

OK I'm done. For now.

wow, that's answered heaps of unasked questions for me too

Big Grin

how fast has this time gone by?

our seats are

|xxx x (space is the aisle and the | is the plane

so i'll probably get the aisle, cause jess will no doubt want the window :P

mum's already photocopied our drivers licence and our passports and we're gunna keep a copy of all in both her and my cases.

i'll be taking digi cam, vid cam, ds x 2 and ipod at least on the flight, can u take your own munchies and stuff?

i've also printed out a free/cheap things to do, for vegas.

plus i read somewhere if we want to see a show (which i wouldn't mind, bette, or cirque etc) that you go to of the day of the show you want to see, and all tickets not sold are half price i think she said.. it opens at 11 and first in best dressed.

mind you the others might have better different ideas, but i thought, we can't just get shitfaced 24/7 :P

i wouldn't mind a night time helicopter flight over vegas, i reckon the view would be amazing.

but again this is just me thinking.
i sometimes wish we'd booked a few more days than what we did, but eh, i'm over it :P

You can take munchies on the plane, but nothing perishable. Most flights bring you plenty of snacks, food and drink, so you're well covered, though.

Don't take any fruit on the plane. You can't bring fresh fruit, nuts, meat etc. back into Oz, either.

I'd be a big yes to Bette and a copter ride.

I'm up for just about anything.

Another tip I thought of is to remember what climate you're going to face once you leave the plane, and dress accordingly.

If it's hot here, and going to be cold there, pack a jumper in your backpack.

If it's vice versa I try to put up with just a T shirt here, so I'm comfy there. You will be given a blanket on the plane, so you shouldn't get cold on there. They usually keep the temperature at a pleasant level. If you are cold you can try asking the stewards for an extra blanket.

You can also try asking if they have any children's entertainment packs, for Jess. I got one when I was nine and thought it was the best thing. It's just colouring and stuff but it can help to make the trip a little more interesting and exciting.

Unfortunately you can't go and see the cockpit any more. I did that quite a few times in the old days and it was wicked cool.

Charge any electronic stuff up before the flight and use it sparingly, or take extra batteries. Apparently some flights these days won't let you use your iPod, because they are worried that you won't be able to hear announcements with your own headphones in.

It might also be a good idea to call the flight up a week ahead of time and let them know you are traveling with a child, if Jess is a fussy eater. They can set her up with a child's meal. You can do that if you have any special dietary requirements, too.

Make sure you don't have any pocket knives in your carry on luggage or on your person as they will confiscate them and never give them back.

There are also some restrictions these days about aerosols and some types of detergent in any sort of luggage. Should be info on the website for your airline company. It's annoying to have to unpack and ditch stuff in the middle of the airport.

Heaps of tips for the price of one!

One more thing - stand by tickets aren't always as cool as they sound.

You often can't get many together, and you often have to wait in line for HOURS to get 'em. A lot of people start lining up really early, so by the time 11 am comes around you are already part of a huge line.

I guess we could take it in turns to stand in line while the rest go and do other stuff. How expensive are the tickets to the shows?

we don't HAVE to do the show stand by thing, i just didn't know how much extra moola everyone was gunna have.

but i also suppose we don't have to do everything together 24/7

i'll look up prices of other things in vegas other than shows now

Big Grin

also if we decide now, should we book it online before we go, better seats and all?
