I hate answering a challenge first. Roll Eyes

"Tied"

Special day
Woman from girl
Dressed in white
Frills and twirls
Present me to the world
No longer your little girl
My sponsors so proud
15, 15, yelled out loud
pretty quincenera girl
*
Sweet sweet, loved by you
Surprised me, like I knew you would
Special beyond my wildest dreams
Chocolate cake without any frosting
Being you, you threw cake at me
Laughed and laughed, til our sides hurt
Tickets to see my favorite ever
Gentle hugs and whispered words, the best
You made it wonderful, best I've ever seen
You loved me at sweet sixteen.

My attempt at breaking the writer's block I have at the moment... who knew I'd be able to write about a birthday, never woulda thought it -- interesting challenge. Smile

=========

“The Best Surprise”

You tried your best, I know you did
You wanted to surprise me with what you hid
A room full of friends on my special day
But the room was virtually empty, I guess it had to be that way

Disco ball dancing in front of my eyes
Rainbow icing cake along for the ride
Girls I didn’t even know laughing with us
But unhappy, you continued to make a fuss

It didn’t matter to me that nothing turned out as planned
The fact that you tried was what made it grand
But little did I know you had more in store
Something you knew I would adore

A present wrapped in the gift of a phone
A voice prior unheard now had a beautiful tone
The happiness you gave me on that night
Will be remembered against the heartaches and the slights

It was the beginning of my birthday but it certainly wasn’t the end
From happiness and friendship to beauty and love it did transcend
I’ll never forget this one moment, you see
For turning 20 was the beginning of life for me.

there's only one b-day i could possibly write about for the Scrolls... Smile

7 May 2001

with a head full of fresh memories
of old friends we'd finally met
we headed West
when there wasn't much more West to go
the Pacific was cold
and maybe a bit mean
meaner than the name implies
meaner than i expected
and i was well-pleased
the quiet day's ride
punctuated by favorite tunes
and breathless laughter
the sunset so perfect
i refuse to ruin it
with attempted description
and a meal i try to this day to duplicate
without success

that day as i stepped onto the rocky beach
and into the Pacific for the very first time
my eyes fell almost immediately
on a rock
exactly like a kind of rock
a very specific kind of rock
my favorite kind of rock
from my favorite place in the Texas desert
more than a thousand miles away
i keep that ocean-smoothed black rock with the white stripe inside
next to it's almost identical, desert-roughed mate
feeling knowing believing
that having found them both
means something important
but still for the life of me
not quite sure
just what that might be

Back to school at an Office Supply store sucks. i'm TIIIIIIREED..... that's my way of saying sorry i was so late in responding, but i did think and read about 'em a long time ago. hopefully i will add on a word or two of my own. on this b-day muse....

Great job guys!

Sara,

you hate and you love it. i liked this part where you said "you loved me at sweet sixteen". there's something intimate and accepting about the whole phrase with a dash of appreciative wonderment. i can't explain it--but i liked it.

i didn't get a quincenera. i've seen one though. so weird. like a wedding without a signif. other!

Gabber!

it's weird how one can swear they've been "awake" their whole lives, and then--sometimes you blink and when your eyes open again EVERYTHING is different and you think... whoa... THIS must be awake.... i liked that

Zooms

i liked this poem cause it sounded nothing like a birthday--you know, had i not set the "muse" i wouldn't have known this was the re-tell of a special b-day... and yet i see the gift of seeing the grandiose display of the world before you, and i understand that feeling. or at least i think i've had a feeling like that before. i liked it. took me where you were. thanks for the trip. Wink

thanks for indulging my request! Big Grin

Wonderful poems, both of you, for the record. Smile I'm surprised more people haven't met the challenge...

zoomie, I didn't realize it was your birthday when you were here for the convention! *laughs* Although I woulda just been happy to have met you back then first of all, let alone wish you a happy bday. Razz Wow though...over three years ago. Seems like yesterday...

monsie, you hit it on the head. That's exactly what I was saying. Smile When you "wake up" finally, you wonder just how it is you ever went through life before...my best friend and I were talking about this when she visited last month-- it's a weird feeling. Even weirder when you realize you're awake now and you don't wanna go backwards.

I can most definitely mark my 20th birthday though as the true beginning of my life. I awoke and things have never been the same since...and I'm okay with that. Smile

so does that mean if you had known you'd have come out of...um...hibernation (for lack of a better term Big Grin) and met me????

my b-day was the Monday after the con--we rented a PTCruiser, got a room in Santa Monica and drove up the coast. it was a sweet, relaxing finish to an incredible few days...

*has to laugh* That... may have been a tall order, but I would have made more of an effort, yes. Wink

Ooh, that sounds very nice. Did you drive up the Pacific Coast Highway, the scenic route? I've always been scared of doing that route since it's nearly always curvy and hanging off a cliff. Razz

I don't have one of my own that stands out right now, but maybe this will do.

A Most Beloved Birthday

She’s made of marshmallows
thick and sweet
with words of wisdom oozing
from every inch of her 11 plus years.
It’s her birthday-
has been for several weeks-
and we keep up the party
amazed at every turn.

I put her in a pink bracelet
costing more than it was worth-
but the value to me is priceless.

When I see her wear it with jeans
and funny t-shirts
I don’t see myself
I see what she will be someday-
if we just hold on and let her go
and never crush the goodness
inside her now.

I don't care for birthdays
I'm to grown up for it
I don't need a cake
I don't need a party
I don't need my friends and family yelling surprise
I just need to know I'm alive
I need to know tomorrow's worth living
I need hope wrapped in colorful paper
I need love and friendship without appointment
I need life to give me more twist and turns
Because driving those roads are so much more entertaining
Give it to me any time of year
But don't fret this day specifically
Because I don't need anything
But I have a thing for money
So, you know...
What ever you wanna leave in that card there. Wink

:P

hey, i have a sense of humor sometimes... *ahem*
