Dreaming Before Nightfall

Lying awake,
My eyes sticky dry,
A numb ache in my brow—
Like I’ve never slept.

How was your night?
I slept like a baby
Tired as a dog, I was—
Away in a dreamland

It was vast…and empty.

Too late in the day.
No time for dreaming.
Gotta work to live.
Make plans for tomorrow.

Is it too late to dream?
Too early to sleep?
Can I hold my head up
until the sun falls?
