Ok, so lately, I've been thinking a lot about accents, dialects, coloquialisms, and such things. I've been noticing for myself how diffrent my voice sounds from that of the people on TV (in the USA). I was wondering how other say things. Of course, I'm not going to put EVERY word up here, just a few that I tend to notice accents with the most. Here's how I'm going to do it: Write the word out phoneticly. And say which syllables you have the word stresses on (if that part's too difficult, that's cool) I'm just curious to see what kind of ansers I get with such a wide range of people here at the scrolls. Oh! and say where you live. If you don't want to be too specific, just give a region of your country. Like, if I didn't want to say I lived in Iowa in the USA, I'd say I live pretty much right in the center of the USA. Ok, I think i've dragged on enough. Here's the fun part. Sure CD(this is one more for where you put the stress on the word) Ten Pillow About Sophmore That Twenty Little Away Know Fortune Yourself Mom That's enough for now. If you have any words you're curious about how others say them, write them here. Just take your time. Say words slowly. Really think about everything that goes into it. Lol, this sounds kind of crazy...now that I think about it. [ October 11, 2002, 06:51 PM: Message edited by: General Jubi Lee ]

Where I've italicized (sp?) is where I put the stress. Sure-Shooer CD-See-Dee Ten-Tehn Pillow-Pill-oh About-Ayb-out Sophmore-Saahfmohr That-Thay-at Twenty-Twehn-knee Little-Lihdd-el Away-A-whey Know-Noh-uh Fortune-Fohr-chuhn Yourself-Yer-sehlf[ Mom-Mahm We have this weird dip-thong here. It's hard to write it in. I tried my best. Most "ay" sounds are pronounced with a slight "e" at the end. So it's like a-whey-ee, only, the ee is really slight. If that makes sense. I'm from Iowa, as I said up above. [ October 11, 2002, 06:58 PM: Message edited by: General Jubi Lee ]

Now that I'm thinking about it, I sometimes say fore-chin. When I'm laughing or arguing the Michigan accent comes out crayon--cra-yin with sort of a short A, but it's almost one syllable...almost like cra-an. Sometimes it's cray-ahn...just depends when I'm saying it either--ee-ther Sydney--sid-nee ....weird, though, sometimes I put a little bit of an A in the ney part. Wow! Great guys! Thanks a lot! How does everybody say "eh" as in "eh, I don't care"? I say it as a short E, but some use the same spelling as having a long A sound. So I'm curious I say it kind of like a glotal sigh, so it's kind of a cross between the short E and an "uh" sound. I'm curious to know how people pronounce: either ee-ther or Aye-ther depending on the usage. how do people say Sydney? Sihd-knee We want to hear ya say CRAYON Oi...I hate this one, all of my friends make fun of me for it. Lol, don't worry, no problems are being dug up, they just tease me. I say it: cran. cement-sa-meant insurance-in-shur-in-s multi-[b]I say it mult-I or Mult-E depending on what comes after it. Mult-I talented Mult-e purpose..I dunno Do you say candy bar or chocolate bar? candy Bathroom or washroom? Bathroom or Restroom depending on those present. People I know real well it's Bath, elders and people i don't know real well it's Rest. Soft drink, soda, pop, Coke? Soda or Coke, usually Coke. I used to say pop too, but the Midwestern Nasal gets on my nerves too much when I say that so I try not to anymore. The whole soda or coke thing changes depending who i'm around. I have lots of friends who used to live in the south, and i unconciously call it Coke around them, and then when i'm around others I unconciously call it soda...it's wierd. Also... Do you find you pick up accents easily? Like, I know that if I'm around anyone from the south for very long, I start to pick up the accent in no time. Seriously, get me around them for an hour or two and I've got their accent. I haven't really been around diffrently-accented people except for southerners, so it might just have to do with them.

quote:Arkansas remembers that it's part of the Louisiana Purchase? Actually, the people in Arkansas City, Kansas pronounce it ARE-kan-zus. Kansans also seem to be the only people along the length of the Arkansas River who use the AR-kan-zus pronounciation. I don't get it either, I just report it. *g* Maybe life in Kansas is so boring that they like to pronounce all the letters in words.
